Full Truck Load (FTL) shipping is the movement of large amounts of cargo, which fills the entirety of the trailer. The entire trailer or truckload are dedicated to a singular customer. Full truckloads often do not make stops in between going from the pick-up to delivery straight through. There are 3 main types of Truckload (TL) shipments; box trucks, dry vans, flatbeds and refrigerated trucks.
Less Truck Load (LTL) is freight that only occupies part of an entire trailer. The LTL carrier combines multiple loads from different shippers into one trailer. This allows multiple shippers to only pay for a portion of the same trailer. In turn, LTL shipping is the most cost-effective method of shipping freight. Using this method of shipping, you are only paying for space your freight is taking up.
